The Cathedral and The Baptistery

The Cathedral is, of course, the main church of Florence. It was built by the architect Arnolfo di Cambio at the end of the XIIIth century in a gothic style.

Then, in the Fifteenth century, Filippo Brunelleschi realized the biggest self-sustaining dome of Europe ever made.

The Baptistery is one of the most important examples of Romanesque style in Florence. It was built between the XIth and the beginning of the XIVth century.

Inside the building the dome is covered with golden mosaics representing the Last Judgement.

The San Marco Museum

This was the most important domenican convent of the city after Santa Maria Novella.

It was changed into a museum in the XIXth century.

This place was so important for the culture of the medieval and the modern time in Florence with its library and its monks.

The painter-monk Beato Angelico lived here. He was the promoter of a new conception of the art, between the gothic and the renaissance style.

Lorenzo il Magnifico came here to study into the big library, as before him, Cosimo the Elder, and then Marsilio Ficino, Agnolo Poliziano and the most important patrons of the Renaissance.

Savonarola, a very uncompromising domenican monk that obtained the power in Florence in the XVth century and that was so important for our story, lived here. Inside the museums we’ll see severals monk’s cells.
