Scalable SQL Patterns

by David Cramer for

This talk will focus on best practices for building scalable web applications using traditional SQL databases (Postgres specifically).

We’ll cover a number of ways you can augment SQL without replacing it, as well as patterns that affect many web applications:

  • Schema changes on a busy application
  • Anti-patterns for optimizing queries
  • Basic horizontal sharding
  • Scalable counters with Redis
  • Materializing streams of data
  • Simple queues as a solution to most problems
