The Business of SMS and Apps in Emerging Markets

Developing applications for several markets can be quite challenging. We have Emerging markets, developed markets and the intermediate markets. However, as human beings, we always want to take on a challenge and push our applications further and making our apps reach not just people who live near us but also people around the world, making it global. A good example is Facebook; facebook supports mobile web/HTML5, feature phones and in some parts of the world SMS (text messaging); twitter too has some use cases.

This talk is about how to make your product reach a global market by harnessing python-tools that have been in existence for a number of years. One such tool is the RapidSMS “application” which is built on top of Django and has integration support with Kannel to SMPP backends (even Twilio) and a GSM modem (for testing).

In this talk we shall go through implementing a fascinating application that will allow people to bet online on games and they can be reverse billed; receiving soccer updates, and so much more. This is a case study to see the marvels of the framework.

RapidSMS has been deployed and used by the UNICEF to track health statistics and supply in the developing world; other organizations have used it to harness easy SMS application design for apps to do with sales tracking and a lot more.
